Customization takes up too much time and is too expensive. One-size-fits all, however, is another extreme. That is why we help OEM developers to structure their product families in a smart way, while our final goal are defining smart, flexible modules in a limited number of variants, and withstanding customization as much as possible. This is called smart customization. ‘Smart’, because it contains a great deal of product analyses, engineering knowledge and supply chain information. So not just a matter of simply using any tool. But in the end a tool often is very useful: a product configurator can apply all the knowledge rules that we have determined in collaboration with the OEM developer, in order to generate the best solution for each customer requirement.

Eight years ago we had to make a practical choice for one of the tools that were available in the market, because we could not support them all. We decided on Tacton, because we were very enthusiastic about it (and still are). We have always promoted that message loud and clear and therefore it has stuck in people’s minds, I realize from time to time.

Recently, a partner addressed me about it. “I was meaning to call you, because you could help us out. But since you’re stuck with Tacton...” That of course was not the message we meant to get across. What matters to us is the principle of smart customization by using product configuration. Tacton is a tool that we have good experience with, but in fact it does not really matter which tool an OEM developer wants to use. We do not sell one-size-fits all.
